What are interactive workshops?

Hands-on Learning

TJCTC provides many programs where attendees are taught the law and best practices. The interative workshops however will put an extra emphasis on hands-on learning. Participants will participate in mock scenarios, panel discussions, and field activities.

Experts in the Field

The interactive workshops will be taught by experts in different fields that touch what justice courts do. Experts will include personnel experts, court security officers, MHMR representatives, and communication professionals.


Civil Law Workshop with Baylor Law School

Baylor Law School & Hotel Indigo Waco
February 12 - 14, 2020
This program is for Justices of the Peace only.

The increase in civil jurisdiction may bring with it an increase in jury trials. From jury selection to judgment, this interactive workshop will take you through all the phases of a civil jury trial with an emphasis on Justice Court issues. Judges will have an opportunity to observer and interact during various parts of this program that is being supported by Baylor Law students.

Where is the program located at?

The program will be located at Baylor Law School.

Attendees staying at the hotel will be staying at Hotel Indigo Waco located at 211 Clay Avenue, Waco, Tx.

How much does this program cost?

What else should I know?

  • Participants will need to drive from the hotel to Baylor Law School each day.
  • Baylor University and all of its properties are smoke-free. Participants will not be able to smoke anywhere on-campus during the workshop.

Court Security for Judges & Clerks

Summer 2019
This program is for Justices of the Peace and Court Personnel.

Court Security officers will discuss current trends in court security in Texas. Participants will watch court security officers run emergency drills and conduct mock threat assessments with participants in groups. An emphasis will be placed on justice of the peace courts in annexes and historical buildings. This interactive course will leave you with a specific action plan on how to make your court and staff safer.

Rural Leadership for Judges and Clerks

Boerne, TX - The Bevy Hotel
July 6 - 8, 2020

This program is for Justices of the Peace and Court Personnel.

Rural courts in Texas are often asked to manage with limited resources. This interactive workshop will discuss what it means to be a leader in rural Texas. Participants will leave the program with the tools to craft a strategic vision that will improve justice in their county. Topics will include leadership in technology, personnel, policies and procedures, and working with other county offices.

Office and Personnel Management for High Volume Courts

This program is for Justices of the Peace, Chief Clerks, and Office Coordinators

How can you make your court effective and empower your staff at the same time? Join this interactive workshop to build skills on leadership and effective communication while networking with Judges, Chief Clerks, and Office Coordinators from other offices. Learn how to address budgeting, personnel issues, policies and procedures, and other challenges. This program will be geared toward urban and suburban counties.

Impaired Driver Symposium

Omni Corps Christi
August 2 - 4, 2020
This program is for Justices of the Peace only.

This unique program pairs justices of the peace with municipal court judges, county judges, and district judges to discuss issues surrounding impaired driving allowing you to network with different jurisdictions. Topics include bond reform, drugged driving, impaired driving, social media, and a scenarios portion where judges will work together to find solutions to impaired driving issues. Additionally, this program is FREE with no registration fee and one-night free hotel room.

The program will be located at Omni Corpus Christi.

When can I register? 

Registration opens October 4th! 

How much does this program cost?

There is no registration free. This program is FREE! Additionally, this program provides a FREE one-night stay in the hotel for the night of August 3rd. (Program begins at 12:00 p.m. on August 3rd.)

2019 - 2020 Regional Programs

The Justices of the Peace and Constables Association of Texas, Inc. (JPCA) awards its judicial education grant to the Texas Justice Court Training Center. Besides JPCA, there are five regional organizations around the state. TJCTC will be providing education at several of these regional organization's annual conferences.

Who can attend?

Anyone can attend the JPCA regional conferences, but participants will need to register with the regional JPCA organization, not with TJCTC.

There will be 8 hours of education provided for Justices of the Peace and Court Personnel and 8 hours of Civil Process education for Constables, Deputies, and Constable Clerks.

TJCTC staff attorneys will teach the Justice of the Peace and Court Personnel portion and TJCTC faculty will teach the Civil Process portion.
