Civil Process Proficiency Certification Exam

Beginning on December 1, 1999, TCOLE created the Civil Process Proficiency Certification. Since the Texas Justice Court Training Center was instrumental in the formulation of the Certification, TCOLE asked us to administer the exam. Read below to find out detailed information about the CPPC exam. 

  • Who is Eligible?

    • You must have at least 3 years of full-time experience in a constable's or sheriff's office working with civil process, as well as successfully completed 40 hours of civil process training with at least 20 hours completed in the last training cycle. 

    • Yes. As of September 1, 2016, constable clerks who can meet all the TCOLE proficiency requirements may take the CPPC exam through TJCTC.

      The requirements are that constable clerks have at least 3 years of full-time experience in a constable's or sheriff's office working with civil process, as well as successfully completed 40 hours of civil process training with at least 20 hours completed in the last training cycle. 

    • Online:
      The online exam requires a laptop/computer with a camera and microphone. Visit our Registration Page to register for the exam and submit payment. 

      Once you have registered and paid for the exam, please email a copy of the receipt to Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu to complete your registration.

      In-Person:
      The exam is currently administered online only. If you don't have access to a computer or have special circumstances that require an in-person exam, please email Jay at jay.takach@txstate.edu to discuss accommodations.

       

      If you obtain a valid passing score on the examination for civil process proficiency certification as approved by the commission, you will then receive a certificate form from TJCTC to submit to TCOLE. This form needs to be completed by the applicant and their supervisor and then mailed to TCOLE with a $35 check or money order. 

      A PID # is required to submit the certification application to TCOLE. 

    • Yes, Sheriffs and their deputies can take the exam but they must first reach out to Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu. 

      There will be a $50 non-refundable administrative fee for the exam. 

  • Exam Information

    • Exams are available online only. If you don't have secure access to a computer or need to discuss special arrangements for taking the exam, please email Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu .

      In order to register for the exam, you must have an existing TJCTC Account. If you don't already have a TJCTC Account, you will need to have your elected Constable submit an application through the New TJCTC Account webpage. 

      If you already have an existing TJCTC Account, you must register to take the online exam through the CPPC Exam Registration webpage.

      Once you have registered and paid for the exam, please email a copy of the receipt to Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu. 

      The exam is administered using Texas State University's Canvas online testing portal. After registering and emailing Jay, you will be provided a link and instructions on how to sign into Canvas and prepare to take the exam. You will have 30 days after you receive the Canvas link to sign in to Canvas and take the exam.  

    • There will be a $40 non-refundable administrative fee for Constables, Deputy Constables, and Constable Clerks to take the exam.

      There will be a $50 non-refundable administrative fee for other Law Enforcement Officers (Sheriffs, Deputy Sheriffs, Etc.) to take the exam. If you work in a Sheriff's office and would like to take the exam, please reach out to Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu  

    • Participants are allowed 60 minutes to complete an exam. 

      The CPPC exam is 50 questions long and consists of multiple-choice questions. It is a comprehensive exam that covers all topics related to the service of civil process; i.e., Citations, Evictions, Writs, Executions.

      To pass the exam, participants must correctly answer at least 35 questions. After completion of the exam, please reach out to Jay Takach at jay.takach@txstate.edu for results. 

    • Successful participants will be given a Civil Process Proficiency Certificate Application that has been signed, dated, and stamped PASSED by TJCTC.

      It is the responsibility of the participant to fill out the application, secure the appropriate signatures, and mail it to TCOLE along with a cashier’s check or money order for $35.00.

      TCOLE will verify that all qualifications have been met and, if so, will send the applicant their Civil Process Proficiency Certificate.

    • A participant can take the exam 3 times before you must re-qualify. Re-qualifying means you need to take 40 hours of Civil Process with at least 20 hours within the last training cycle.
